Wayfaring to Philotheou.

The Holy Monastery of Philotheou lies on the eastern side of the Athonite peninsula, between the Monasteries of Karakallou and Iviron. It was founded in the 10th century by Saint Philotheos.

Arrival at Ouranoupolis

Collection of the Diamonitirion (permit). Departure of the boat to Daphni, or directly to Philotheou.

Voyage and ascent

From the monastery’s arsanas (harbour), an uphill walk of a few kilometres beneath the shade of the chestnut trees.

Hospitality and veneration

A welcome with loukoumi and raki. The icon is venerated in the catholicon during the services.

DRESS
Long trousers, covered shoulders. During the Liturgy, strictly modest attire.
LENGTH OF STAY
Usually one overnight stay; extension possible with permission.
REFECTORY
Two meals daily; in silence, with reading.
ASCESIS
The Monastery follows the Byzantine clock and typikon.
ENTRY
Men only; women’s pilgrimage takes place externally, at the borders.
